Canesten 1, 500 mg soft vaginal capsule

Canesten1 contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, which belongs to the group of imidazoles. It is antifungal (kills fungi and inhibits their growth) and also against some other microorganisms (dermatophytes, yeasts and moulds).

Canesten1 is used to treat infections of the vagina and external female genitalia caused by microorganisms sensitive to clotrimazole. The infections are usually caused by fungi (from the genus Candida). Symptoms include itching, burning and a thick, white to yellowish, odourless vaginal discharge (similar to cottage cheese), redness, swelling and pain.

This medicine is used in adults and adolescents aged 16 years and over.

Treatment with Canesten1 is not recommended during menstruation. Treatment should be completed before the start of menstruation.

Do not use tampons, vaginal douches, spermicides or other vaginal products at the same time as Canesten1.

Avoid sexual intercourse while using this medicine, as the infection may be passed on to your sexual partner. If your sexual partner has symptoms of a yeast infection, they should be treated at the same time. Treating sexual partners can help prevent reinfection.

The contraceptive properties of latex products such as condoms and diaphragms may be reduced. Canesten1 should not be taken by mouth.
